At VB Transform 2024, International Business Machines' David Cox delivered a convincing rationale for collaborative development in business machine learning. Cox, VP of AI models and director at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, emphasized the importance of openness in technological advancement, particularly in the current artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The IBM executive pointed out the complex character of transparency in artificial intelligence, questioning the binary view of the concept. He observed the burgeoning community of transparent systems from diverse origins, including technology corporations, academic institutions, and nation-states.
However, he articulated reservations about the nature of transparency in many Large Language Models, pointing out that certain models offer barely more than a collection of data points without openness in their development processes.
